CyanogenMod, for those who have never heard of it, is an Android ROM that runs on damn near everything. It’s been download over a million times, and for good reason too. Handset makers and operators like to mess around with Android in order to make their products look different from all the other Android devices out on the market. In doing so, they often break things, make the OS run slow, and in most cases make Android look absolutely hideous. We’re looking at you, HTC. What CyanogenMod does is give people control of their Android device again, while also giving smartphone enthusiasts a plethora of options to play with. Today the CyanogenMod team is announcing a new mascot called Cid, which is short for CyanogenMod ID.
As you can see from the image above, gone is the old mascot, which was nothing more than Google’s little robot riding on a skateboard. He’s now been replaced by something more akin to Samuel L. Jackson, better known as a “Bad Ass Mother Fucker”. So why the change? CyanogenMod feels like they need to grow up, and that their previous mascot, which they had for three years, doesn’t accurately represent their image.
Whatever.
All we know is that CyanogenMod produces some awesome work, regardless of what they want their new logo to be, and we hope that they keep on doing what they’re doing. At the same time, we’re sad to admit that the only reason these folks exist is because companies are destroying Android. When companies stop mucking about with Google’s software, will CyanogenMod continue to be useful? That’s a tough question to answer. We’re reminded that there once was a time when you had to jailbreak your iPhone to do anything useful on it. That’s no longer the case for a majority of people.
Will the same happen to Android? Hopefully.
