LG D1L: Another flagship device from LG? Whatever happened to the Optimus 4X HD?

Samsung’s flagship device this year is going to be the Galaxy S III. HTC has the One X. Nokia has the Lumia 900. And Apple will have whatever they end up calling the next iPhone. But what about LG? At Mobile World Congress in February, the South Korean company announced the “world’s first” quad core smartphone, the Optimus 4X. We say “world’s first” because HTC’s One X, which also has a quad core chip, is already on sale in Europe, yet the Optimus 4X has yet to touch a store shelf. Anyway, propaganda marketing aside, there’s a rumor floating around the internets right now that LG is working on yet another flagship device. The D1L, as it’s called internally, will have a 4.7 inch screen that pushes 1280 x 720 pixels, just like the Optimus 4X, but instead of being powered by a quad core Tegra 3, it’ll be powered by a dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4. We actually prefer Qualcomm’s S4 to NVIDIA’s Tegra 3, so this is a welcome change, but then again if LG is having trouble bringing the Optimus 4X to market … what hope is there of them bringing the D1L out on time? The sources go on to say that the D1L will actually ship before the Optimus 4X, so then why did LG even bother developing the “world’s first quad core” vaporware device?

The big question is should you buy whatever LG intends on bringing to market? That’s hard to say. We’re not big fans of LG’s Android skin, they have a terrible track record when it comes to issuing updates for their devices, and let’s be frank for a minute, when was the last time anyone actually lusted over an LG handset? That’s this author’s personal opinion however, and there are likely people out there who have a thing for LG.
