Rumor: Samsung decided to give the Galaxy S III a home button after a massive internal debate

One of the best things about Android 4.0 is the fact that it doesn’t need any front facing buttons to run. Just look at the Galaxy Nexus, it’s a beautiful solid sheet of glass. HTC’s 2012 flagship, the One X, has three hideous buttons, and that seriously makes us sad. So what about Samsung’s hero device, the Galaxy S III? According to Digital Daily, a Korean news organization, Samsung decided at the last minute to put a home button on the front of their as yet to be announced flagship. That’s pretty ridiculous when you think about it. Normally designs are finalized months before a device hits the market. We expect the Galaxy S III to land on store shelves either at the end of next month or in the beginning of June. Anyway, The Korean site goes on to say that Samsung will tweak the user interface of the Galaxy S III to have five columns of icons, instead of the typical four. What other Samsung device has five columns? The Note.

Forgetting about the home button “issue” for a second, the bigger question is what will Samsung do to the Galaxy S III to make it stand out from the rest of the crowd? Everyone has already played their cards, and to tell you the truth … most of them stink. Sure, HTC made Sense less annoying, but it’s still in your way. Sony’s Xperia S, it’s a 2011 device pretending to have 2012 credentials. The Nokia Lumia 900 is a toy, LG is always a step behind Samsung, and Apple isn’t going to show off the next iPhone until this fall. In other words, it’s not going to take much for Samsung to wow us. All we want is a smartphone with a non-PenTile AMOLED display, amazing build quality, and little to no Android skinning.

Is that too much to ask?
