Canada’s most read (and free) national daily newspaper Metro launched its Android and iOS apps, along with a new website and a $5-million national ad campaign. At the same time, the magazine expanded to 6 additional cities across the country and now covers 15 markets.

Readers obviously liked the apps, with Metro News taking the #1 free news app in the App Store, and has had more than 27,000 downloads. The Android version, on the other hand, is the #4 free news app, and has had more than 3,400 downloads.

Feature wise, Metro News comes with a nice lookin’ “mosaic” cover screen, big box ad unit (which is incorporated into the mosaic), offline download capability, ability to schedule automatic downloads of new content at a specific time each day (Android only), flip functionality to open the cover screen for a preview of all app sections, 3D horoscopes interface, and easy sharing of all content…
