Bloomberg: RIM looking to hire a bank to help it weigh its options

RIM is finally coming to terms with the reality that BlackBerry is losing ground to iOS and Android. To turn itself around, RIM recently cleaned out its executive leadership and is now looking to hire a financial adviser to help it weigh strategic options going forward, says a Bloomberg report.

Hiring a bank to help with its finances does not mean RIM wants to sell, at least not right away. RIM’s CEO Thorston Heins told investors recently that a sale is a possibility, but that’s not “the main direction” he wants to pursue with the struggling company. What this direction will be remains to be seen, but analysts like Matt Thornton of Avian Securities LLC suggest RIM should license its BlackBerry services to companies like Samsung. Analysts believe licensing is the Canadian company’s best option based on its current cash situation.

Bloomberg says RIM spokeswoman Tenille Kennedy declined to comment on this report.
