Sony's PlayStation Suite developer program now in open beta

Sony has expectantly opened its PlayStation Suite developer program to the general public. Still in beta, it allows developers to grab the SDK and create apps and games that can work on PS Vita and a number of PlayStation Certified devices like the new Xperia range, as well as Xperia Play and Sony tablets (S and P).

Once the beta period is up later this year, developers interested to reach Sony device owners will have to pay their way to the PlayStation Store, the benefit that costs some 100 bucks per year.

Also coming later in the year is support for in-app purchases, which is a must-have feature to bring major companies like Glu Mobile and Gameloft on board.

The problem, however, is the limited availability of Xperia phones which can deter many companies from joining the program once it starts costing them money. While in beta (and free), I see no reason why every app/game maker shouldn’t join-in, see how things are going and whether that $99 annual subscription is justified or not…
