Mobile VoIP and messaging service/app Line2 updated its iOS app with support for MMS, which was apparently one of the most asked-for features by Line2’s users. Despite being ready to launch since the Fall of 2011, the carriers (Verizon is especially mentioned) have been blocking MMS interconnect for Over the Top (OTT) services like Line2, Google Voice, Pinger and Gogii.
So Line2 developed a work-around, which aside from iOS will also be available for Android in the near future. Users can send photos to mobile phones via a link that can be accessed by the receiver without needing to enter a special code. The service still cannot receive pictures from outside the Line2 network because of the mentioned problem with the carriers. In other words, both sender and receiver need the Line2 app for “true MMS” to work.
And if you don’t know what Line2 is all about, you should know that it wants to be a second line on your iOS or Android smartphone, or to add phone capabilities to the iPad or iPod Touch…
