Hack your T-Mobile G1 to work with any iPod speaker dock!

If you thought your T-Mobile G1 was limited to using HTC’s proprietary extUSB port for listening to music, well… you’d be right. Now, if you thought you’d be able to hack your T-Mobile G1 to work with any iPod-compatible speaker dock, you’d be right on the money. A new hack for the G1 allows enterprising handset modders to use their T-Mobile G1 with any “Made for iPod” or “Made for iPhone” docks.

It’s not necessarily a “clean” hack, what with exposed wiring and a MacGyver’ed extUSB plug protuding from the button of the G1. But, it does get the job done and proves that a bit of resolve and a voltmeter are a handset hacker’s best friends.

The hack works by connecting the T-Mobile G1’s extUSB port to an Apple iPod dock connector. Thanks to the hard work of hackers at WebNetta, we now know how to wire the pins in the T-Mobile G1 to their appropriate pins in the iPod dock connector.

Instructions for the hack are fairly straight forward, but looks to require a good deal of dexterity. If your fingers are clumsier than they are nimble, you may want to stay away from this particular hack.
