U.S. Cellular has announced plans to embrace Windows Phone 8 as a viable third smartphone OS platform, according to a report from PC Mag. In a statement provided to PC Mag, the U.S. Cellular Public Relations Department announced that it is excited to offer Windows Phone 8 devices when the platform launches later this year. The company joins Verizon, T-Mobile USA, and AT&T as the large U.S. carriers to openly embrace Windows Phone 8.

There’s a lot to like about Windows Phone 8, from the revamped home screen with resizable live tiles to the shared core with Windows 8, support for HD resolutions and microSD expansion, and NFC support. Sure, several of these features are already available on competitor platforms, but many in the tech community feel Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 puts the company in a strong position to win customers over, and that the company’s implementation of some of these features is done in a unique and refreshing way.
The level of support for Windows Phone 8 is fairly impressive given that the nearly two-year-old platform has failed to garner more than a 5% smartphone market share in the U.S. Clearly several carriers out there see the potential for the platform, and customers looking to get in on the Windows Phone action should have no shortage of carrier choices come this fall.
