Google Now pulled out from Jellybean and ported to Ice Cream Sandwich

You’ve heard about Google Now, which is one of the main features Jellybean brings to the table. Thanks to the ever-active hacking community, folks with Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones can now join the party, too. In order to do so, you’ll need a rooted device and a bit of tech skills. Here’s how to do it according to XDA-Developers’ member “febycv“:

  • Open Root Explorer and navigate to /system
  • Now Open build.prop in Text Editor.
  • Edit ro.build.version.sdk = 16 and save.
  • Go to /system/app and rename GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk to GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk1
  • Reboot and install the app from the download link.
  • Finally, edit build.prop and change ro.build.version.sdk = 15, and reboot.

Alternatively you can try out a different version of Google Now that doesn’t require editing of the build.prop and which can be downloaded from here. You’ll need to rename the APK to GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk, push it to System/App and set permissions RW-R-R.

Although the process sounds easy, we really can’t suggest you to do this unless you really know what you’re doing. Something could always go wrong and brick your phone…
