comScore have released their latest report on mobile operating system market share in the US for the period ending July 2012. Google’s Android grew by 1.4% in the quarter and now finds itself on 52.2% of all smartphones. Apple’s iOS also grew, gaining 2.0% and breaking the one-third barrier with a 33.4% share of the U.S. market. The growth continued to come at the expense of everyone else, with RIM, Microsoft, and Symbian falling 2.1%, 0.4%, and 0.5%, respectively.

RIM has fallen below 10% (9.5%) for the first time in comScore’s reports, and Microsoft only commands 3.6% of the market with its Windows Phone and Windows Mobile platforms ahead of the launch of Windows Phone 8. Nokia and Microsoft will be in New York today showing off both Microsoft’s latest operating system and the two devices Nokia has prepared for Windows Phone 8, and they’ll both have their work cut out for them if they’re to make a dent in the 85% market share number currently garnered by the two market leaders.

On the OEM side, Apple gained nearly 2 percentage points to comprise 16.3% of all phones (smartphone and non-smartphone devices) sold in the quarter ending July 2012. The company is still the third largest mobile phone maker in the U.S. at 16.3%. Samsung maintains their lead at 25.6% (-0.3%), followed by LG at 18.4% (-0.8%), Apple, Motorola at 11.2% (-1.3%), and HTC at 6.4% (+0.4%).
