Many loyal iOS users stayed up through the night or woke up at 3am EST to preorder the iPhone 5, and Apple sold out of the initial inventory in about an hour. Apple has revealed this morning record sales for the iPhone 5 in the first 24 hours of availability; customers purchased over 2 million iPhones during that period. For comparison, the iPhone 4S sold a million units in the first 24 hours, and the iPhone 4 sold just 600,000. For its part, AT&T announced record sales on its network, though no sales figures were released.
While most of the iPhone’s preordered will land in consumers hands on Friday, those who missed the cutoff are looking at getting devices in early October unless they want to brave the long lines at retail stores this Friday. Apple stores and other retailers will be selling the iPhone 5 starting at 8am on Friday, but your best bet is to line up early if you plan on getting your grubby mitts on the next iPhone.
