Today’s a big day for the millions of people who already own an iOS device. It’s about to get hundreds of new features according to Apple. Probably only a couple dozens or so will actually be meaningful to you, but hey, at least you’ll be able to get the software update at all unlike some other fragmented platforms. You’ll be able to get downloading at approximately 10 a.m. pacific time and 1 p.m. eastern time today.

Some of the improvements from iOS 5 include Apple’s updated Maps app in which it says goodbye to Google Maps as a platform, instead opting to use its own. Turn-by-turn directions and 3D Flyover view are two welcome additions. Siri is now compatible with the 4th-generation iPod touch as well as the third-generation iPad and that woman can perform new stunts now too like give you sports scores, find movies in theaters nearby, and help you book a reservation at your favorite restaurant. Other notable features include Facebook integration throughout the OS, shared Photo Streams, Passbook for storing boarding passes, loyalty cards, and more, FaceTime over cellular, and Panorama mode in the Camera app.

iOS 6 is a free software update compatible with the iPhone 3GS and newer, 4th-generation iPod touch and newer, and iPad 2 and newer. Certain devices may not get certain features though. For instance, the iPad 2, iPhone 4, and iPhone 3GS won’t get Siri integration, nor will they get FaceTime over cellular or Panorama mode.

So what do you think? Is iOS 6 a worthy update for iDevice owners?
