Need Help on a Train? SOS… er, I mean SMS For Help!

india-sms-trainIndian Railway Police have initiated a new system to allow passengers to get help while they’re traveling by rail. The system allows passengers to send an SMS message to a designated number for immediate help. The government’s railway police constable in the area will (should) arrive and provide assistance… At least that’s the plan.

In an excerpt concerning the new service via the Times of India:

The facility introduced on Tuesday will allow passengers inside trains and at railway stations across the state to post complaints and request police assistance.

“The messages will be forwarded to the beat constables based on the train number or station name given by the passengers. In case of the crime reported is grievous like doping, dacoity (robbery by a gang of armed dacoits), robbery or derailment, the message will be forwarded to higher level officials,” said inspector general of police G U G Sastry.

Good idea. Now, how it actually plays out in reality… I guess we’ll see.
