Nokia says Linux job posting was for HERE maps, not Android

A recent Nokia job listing for a Principal Software engineer to work on Embedded Linux Middleware kicked off a flurry of posts suggesting the Finnish handset maker might be pursuing Android. Though many would love to see an Android-based Lumia 920 phone, this isn’t going to happen in the foreseeable future, says the head of Nokia’s media relations department.

According to Nokia’s Doug Dawson, the job listing has nothing to do with Nokia switching to Android, instead the company was looking for an engineer to work on HERE Maps for other platforms including Android. The company’s new HERE maps app is available on iOS, while an SDK for Android will be available for OEMs in 2013. Presumably, the new hire for this position will work on this latter project.
