According to Mobile Today, Vodafone had a recent annual meeting at it’s HQ in Newbury, UK – where it told all the handset vendors it was consolidating its range. Standardisation of service and UE (user experience) was also intimated apparently.
Vodafone have always required customisation from vendors – both on the hardware, and (especially) the handset SW (user interface) – but it seems for more work they want to pay less too.
Consolidation can always seem like a good idea, and a great way of reducing business service costs – but consumers do like a variety – and moreover, segments in the market have very different needs. If fewer platforms and form-factors are available, surely variety drops away? Time will tell….
