Apple and Samsung dominate holiday sales

Bitter rivals Apple and Samsung are driving holiday sales, according to the latest IDC report. Both companies are the big winners in the quarterly Worldwide Connected Smart Device report that IDC released today. In the report, the rivals scored big when it came to PCs, smartphones, and tablets, as those numbers grew to 27.1 percent year over year.

The third quarter seen some absurd numbers ranked in like a total of 303.6 million devices, which is worth a staggering $140.4 billion. Now that’s a lot of product moved; most of which comes from both of the company’s two biggest movers: smartphones and tablets. Samsung topped Apple this season in market share with nearly 22 percent of products shipped.

IDC’s Ryan Reith noted that we should expect things between Samsung and Apple to intensify even more. However, he did point out the vast difference between the two when it comes to average selling price, which Apple clearly has an advantage in.

“The battle between Samsung and Apple at the top of the smart connected device space is stronger than ever.” He added “Both vendors compete at the top of the tablet and smartphone markets. However, the difference in their collective ASPs [average selling price] is a telling sign of different market approaches. The fact that Apple’s ASP is $310 higher than Samsung’s with just over 20 million fewer shipments in the quarter speaks volumes about the premium product line that Apple sells.”

The IDC expects tablet shipments in Q4 to grow 55.8 percent and smartphones 39.5 percent.
