Huawei is piggy-banking on Microsoft’s 4Afrika initiative with plans to offer its Ascend W1 smartphone on the continent as Huawei 4Afrika. As you would imagine, this is the same phone as the original Ascend W1 though it will come with a slightly smaller battery with a capacity of 1,730mAh (instead of 1,950mAh). Rest of the specs are unchanged and include a 4-inch WVGA touchscreen, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 5-megapixel rear camera, front-facing one (for video calls), 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, 4GB of internal memory and a microSD expansion slot. In addition, it’s worth adding that pre-installed software will include some locally-made apps.

The Huawei 4Afrika will be available in few color options — including blue, red, black and white — in a number of countries like Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, the Ivory Coast, Angola, Morocco and South Africa by the end of March. Price was not mentioned, though I would say we’re talking about a rather affordable smartphone, one that should help Microsoft grow its market share on the continent.
