The Archos GamePad  is making its debut in the U.S.today, carrying with it a price tag of $179.00. The Android powered tablet/gaming device, which was released in Europe in December of last year, is focused on gaming by combining a PSP-like physical gamepad with an Android Jelly Bean powered tablet.

The Archos GamePad runs on Android 4.1, and touts a 7-inch display with a resolution of 1024 x 600, a dual-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A9 processor, a Mali-400 MP GPU, 1GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, front-facing camera, 8 GB of built-in and a microSD expansion slot. The GamePad also comes with a button mapping tool, allowing almost any game to function with the physical hardware buttons.

If you are an Android gamer who has been longing for a physical keypad, than this could be the device for you. With NVIDIA’s Project Shield on the horizon, Archos is entering into a new era of Android based portable gaming devices.
