Ohio drivers can now store their license in Google Wallet

Ohio Android users no longer have to dig through their wallet every time someone needs to see their ID. As of today, Ohio residents can add a digital driver’s license or state ID directly to Google Wallet, following an official announcement from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. That’s big news for a state with millions of Android users who’ve been watching iPhone owners do this since 2024.

The timing matters here. Google’s digital ID program had been sitting at 11 supported regions for about 10 months with no expansion. Ohio breaks that streak and becomes the 12th region to join the list, alongside states like California, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland, plus Puerto Rico. Governor Mike DeWine and BMV Registrar Charlie Norman both backed the rollout publicly, framing it as part of a broader push to modernize state services. So this isn’t just a tech update, it’s a policy move too.

The digital ID works at TSA checkpoints across the country, Ohio state government buildings, casinos, and participating local businesses. State officials are still recommending you keep your physical card handy for traffic stops, but for most everyday situations, your phone is enough. The way it works is actually pretty smart from a privacy standpoint. You never hand your phone to anyone. Instead, you hold it near a reader, your screen shows exactly what information is being requested, and you approve it with Face Unlock, a fingerprint, or a PIN. Verification happens through encrypted NFC or Bluetooth QR scanning. Clean and private.

Speaking of privacy, your mobile ID stays on your device only. It doesn’t sync to the cloud, which means it won’t show up across your other devices. But if your phone gets lost or stolen, you can remotely wipe the credential through your Google account at myaccount.google.com. That’s a solid safety net.

Getting set up is straightforward. You’ll need Android 8 or higher with a screen lock enabled, then:

  • Open Google Wallet, tap “View more,” then the plus icon, then “Add to Wallet”
  • Select “IDs and personal info,” choose “Driver’s license or state ID,” then select Ohio
  • Photograph the front and back of your physical ID
  • Record a short facial verification video for the BMV to confirm your identity

After submission, the BMV processes everything and sends you an email and app notification once your digital ID is live. And yes, the card design includes Ohio’s state bird, the Northern Cardinal. A small touch, but it’s there.

The bigger picture is that digital ID adoption is moving fast. More states are signing on, and the infrastructure at airports and businesses is catching up. Ohio joining this program is a sign that mobile credentials are becoming a normal part of daily life, not just a novelty for early adopters.
