Bigger screens require more power, and more power means bigger batteries. As I’m writing this, handset makers are shipping high-end smartphones and phablets with 3,000 mAh batteries that can take us through the day. That, however, is not enough for many users who demand at least two days of battery life from their devices.

To tackle this problem, a number of companies are working on innovative battery technologies, one of them being Hitachi Maxell, which says it has found the way to pack 60% more capacity onto the same size battery. In other words, they way that a battery size of 2,000mAh could be able to provide users with up to 3,200mAh of capacity.

It is said that these batteries have energy density 1.6 times larger than that of the existing ones, ensuring the extra 60% in usage time. Moreover, the technology also has additional tricks, like monitoring the movements of Lithium ions inside the battery in real time to ensure the distribution of reaction is homogenized so that flow of Lithium ions doesn’t become stagnant. This in return makes the deterioration rate of the battery slower, providing longer lifetime of a battery.

Pretty powerful stuff though at the moment we don’t know when a smartphone packing this technology will be released. Hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later, and you bet we’ll let you know the second we hear something about it…
