T-Mobile stops bleeding customers, adds over a half a million in Q1

T-Mobile is on a roll as of late. First, the fourth largest carrier in the U.S. started the year off strong by getting the government nod for its MetroPCS merger. Moreover, the company’s rambunctious CEO introduced its new non-contract plans; calling for other major wireless providers to “cut the bullshit.”

Now Magenta has decided to show some preliminary customer churn numbers to show its improving performance. And the numbers are impressive. For years we’ve ragged on T-Mobile for bleeding customers, but today that seems to be a thing of the past. The company claims to have added 579,000 customers. This number includes 3,000 on its branded service (post-paid) along with MVNOs and other unbranded users of its network.

Of course, this is miles better than last quarter’s net loss of 349,000 customers. T-Mobile hopes to see more subscribers join up as it brings the HTC One, iPhone 5, and Galaxy S 4 in the coming weeks. The “Uncarrier” approach may actually be the wave of the future. However a lot needs to be proven before we bank on a revolutionary change in the current system. That said, we wouldn’t be surprised if the other major carriers begin to follow T-Mobile’s lead by enacting similar strategies.

Who’s thinking of joining the new T-Mobile?
