Prices of mobile chipsets for smartphones and tablets are expected to decline 10-20% in the second half of the year due to competition between MediaTek and Qualcomm, driving down the prices of smartphones along the way.

Today Qualcomm is hosting its annual Qualcomm reference design forum in Shenzhen, China in an effort to attract participants from Chinese handset and tablet makers. Aside from showing off its H2 plans, the chip maker also looks to grab some clients from MediaTek, which is a dominant solution provider among Chinese vendors.

Qualcomm’s reference designs are used by more than 40 OEMs which have launched more than 200 smartphones and tablets in 14 countries recently.

Aside from Qualcomm and MediaTek, there are other contenders in this game, including Spreadtrum Communications which has recently launched quad-core smartphone solution that costs less than $10 in China.

Interesting times and cheaper devices are ahead of us. With so many companies making Android devices, major vendors will have harder time convincing us to pay a premium for their gear. Which further translates into cheaper smartphones and tablets. Yey for that. 😉
