Mozilla won’t follow Google’s footsteps and launch its own-brand Firefox OS smartphones. In an interview with DigiTimes, the company’s SVP of Mobile Devices and President of Mozilla’s Asia Operations, Li Gong, confirmed that we won’t be seeing anything like the Nexus series. Rather the popular browser maker may work on “reference models” that could be adopted and tweaked by OEM partners.
During the next few weeks and months, interested users will be able to choose between two low-end models, ZTE Open and Alcatel OneTouch Fire, with smartphones from other OEMs coming later in the year. Among those looking to experiment with the nascent platform are Huawei, LG and Sony though it’s still unclear when any of these will launch their Firefox OS devices.
According to Li Gong, Mozilla has received “increasing inquiries” about the operating system from vendors following Google’s acquisition of Motorola…
From what I’ve seen, Firefox OS is still a bit of work in progress and we’ll have to wait for the first super-phone running Mozilla’s mobile platform to get excited about it. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait for too long to see something like that…
