Japan's NTT DoCoMo not interested in iPhone

Not all operators around the world are wetting their pants over the iPhone. NTT DoCoMo is one of them as it has been refusing to sell Apple’s device for quite some time despite losing customers to competing networks that carry the iPhone.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, DoCoMo’s Senior VP Kazuto Tsubouchi said they are “not necessarily against the idea of selling the iPhone. It just depends on the conditions. What’s the procurement cost? What kinds of obligations do we have if we sell the iPhone?”

He went on to mention the marketing benefits while adding that conditions are still not favorable to Apple’s carrier partners. “Other Japanese carriers are selling iPhones at very low prices, and that means their sales expenses must be very high,” he added.

Instead, DoCoMo has been pushing high-end Android smartphones with its own services and customizations running on top, helping it achieve higher ARPUs…
