Former Apple CEO tells BlackBerry to drop its hardware to survive

John Sculley will forever be known as the CEO who ousted Steve Jobs from his position as Macintosh head in 1985. Now working as a partner at healthcare investment firm Sculley Brothers, Sculley is a fan of the BlackBerry platform and its Qwerty keyboard-focused handsets. Speaking to Bloomberg about the struggling Canadian handset manufacturer, Sculley says the company has to change its strategy if it wants to improve its market position. His strategy change? For BlackBerry to drop their phones and focus on their BlackBerry messaging service. He said,

“The clock is running on them. They can come back if they drop hardware and focus on secure messaging.”

These comments come hot on the heels of a less than stellar quarterly report that saw BlackBerry’s profit and phone shipments slip.
