Qualcomm to join the smart watch game?

Looks like Qualcomm may join the smart watch game. The company has recently filed for the “Qualcomm TOQ” trademark with the USPTO (links: here and here), the device that is described as a “Personal communication hub in the form of a wristwatch; portable electronic devices for transmitting and reviewing text, data, image, and audio files; hands free devices for mobile phones; battery chargers.”

Presuming they are indeed looking to enter this market, they will not necessarily offer these watches directly to consumers. Rather, the largest mobile chip maker may opt to sell reference designs to its OEM partners which in turn would design and market the final products.

When you think about it, the wearable electronics market is set for boom and Qualcomm would be crazy to forgo it. By launching a full blown solution for OEMs it could easily dominate the market, making smart watches more affordable, hence more popular.

We’re eager to see where this leads and will definitely be getting back to you as soon as we have something new to add. Stay tuned in the meantime, k?
