HTC profit jumps over previous quarter, still down year-on-year

HTC is still struggling to return to the place it once held in the smartphone market. Their recent quarterly earnings do show the signs of recovery but they’re still far off the figures the Taiwanese company’s shareholders used to enjoy.

Despite launching the HTC One, the company made just $41 million after tax from $2.35 billion revenue. In comparison, HTC managed to make $246 million out of $3 billion revenue in the same quarter last year. The latest figures, however, do show an improvement over previous quarter when HTC reported profits of just $2.8 million.

Analysts had hoped HTC will make more money out of the HTC One sales, but apparently the marketing and R&D costs were too high (or something of that sort). The company is now looking to launch a smaller version of its flagship device, HTC One Mini, later in the year and catch folks looking for a more affordable, mid-range product. As far as we know, this Mini version will be a rock-solid device catered towards the folks who find today’s high-end smartphones too big to carry around. We’ll see whether it can help HTC get back on its track…
