Google Play Passes 50 Billion Downloads

Google CEO Larry Page announced today that Google Play downloads have surpassed 50 billion. Page dropped the news during the company’s second quarter earnings call.

Last may at Google I/O, Google announced that people had downloaded 48 billion apps. Right around the same time, Apple announced its iTunes App Store had surpassed 50 billion downloads.

Back in early June, analyst Shen Ye, whose algorithm correctly predicted the date that Google Play downloads would reach 25 billion, predicted that Google Play would hit the 50bn mark on June 9th. Ye’s algorithm was close, but a bit more than a month off.

Larry Page also highlighted the fact that more money has been paid out to app developers in the first half of 2013 than all of 2012, showing a marked growth in Android app market.

So, Apple, you’ve got your work cut out for you! The Android ecosystem and Google Play are chomping at iTunes’ heels. Android’s growing install base will only speed this growth.
