It was back in 2009 when we shared the image of an Apple-like Meizu store that was opened in Shenzhen, China. While it looks fancy, the store comes with a cost, which apparently can’t justify its existence. So Meizu wants to shut it down as part of the wider cost-cutting strategy that will allow the company to make even more affordable devices.
And store closing is just one piece of the puzzle. Meizu will apparently also shut down its assembly lines and outsource phone production to Foxconn. As a result, they should be able to better compete with newer smartphone makers in China like Xiaomi, which has been growing like crazy in the last couple of years.
We still don’t know whether Meizu plans to bring its gear to the West (like Oppo), and can only hope that too is included in their strategy. We’ll make sure to get back to you as soon we have something new to add to this story. Stay tuned in the meantime…
