UK’s EE is the latest operator to join the current craze and offer a new handset mid-contract, an approach that has already proved popular with other carriers.
The company, which is formed as a joint venture between Orange and T-Mobile, is hoping to get users looking to get the new iPhone 5S (or iPhone 5C) but found themselves in the middle of a contract period.
EE’s new package, called Swap, allows users to upgrade to a new smartphone when they are a minimum of six months into an 18- or 24-month contract. However, it is required that users start a new two-year contract in return for their handset, as well as return their old device and pay a one-off fee that varies between £49 and £249. The returned device must be in “good working order, with no significant dents, scratches or cracks on the screen.”
The new program is open to 4G EE, Orange and T-Mobile subscribers. And combined with EE’s leadership in the LTE market, it could help cement the company’s position as the leading carrier in the UK.
