Chinese search giant Baidu is going for the users of Shazam and SoundHound with a new feature of its music app that allows users to identify music they hear by exposing the app to an audio clip.
Baidu Music app is available for iPhone and Android users, and has already been downloaded more than half a million times. Users can also share music information with friends via various social networks. The Baidu Music database is said to contain several million music items from 17 music lists, including the UK chart.
The new capability was made possible by the Baidu-I2R Research Centre in Singapore, which previously developed technology to unlock a Lenovo smartphone using voice.
Baidu’s recent moves in the mobile industry include acquisition of Chinese Android app store Wireless 91 for $1.9 billion, and introduction of the Light Apps distribution platform that allows consumers to use mobile apps without download them (web apps).
