Samsung to buy chips from MediaTek?

Looks like MediaTek has scored a big client. Really big. Yup, Samsung may opt to use the vendor’s chips in some of its products.

According to the Chinese-language Commercial Times and brought to our attention by DigiTimes, MediaTek is expected to enter the supply chain of Samsung Electronics with its quad- and 8-core mobile processors in the second half of 2014.

We’d have to guess Sammy will use MediaTek’s gear in its low-to-mid end smartphones and tablets, leaving the higher end of the market for its own Exynos processors and those made by Qualcomm.

While MediaTek’s chips do rock four or eight cores, it’s important to note these are usually slower Cortex-A7 cores that may be power-efficient but can’t deliver the performance of faster Cortex-A9 and Cortex-A15 cores.

MediaTek has been growing like crazy in the last few years, with many Chinese vendors opting to use these chips, rather than more expensive ones made by the likes of Qualcomm. Among the companies relying on MediaTek chips are the rising star Xiaomi, Coolpad and many other, less-known vendors.
