ZTE is looking to expand to wearable computing devices, a senior company executive said in an interview with FierceWireless.

The world’s No. 5 handset maker said it will “definitely” participate in and support “the new segment of broadband mobile devices” and is “investing a lot of resources” in “the different form factors for the next generation of mobile devices.”

Now we’re not sure whether the Chinese company is looking at the smart watch or eyewear space, and whether it will use an existing platform or build its own from the scratch. Alternatively, there’s also an option to acquire a smaller company, but thus far that wasn’t the way ZTE was doing business. So it could start with Qualcomm’s Toq smart watch platform and build from there.

In related news, ZTE wowed to support Windows Phone 8 as well as Firefox OS, and is readying the first smartphone running Mozilla’s platform as we speak. It is said that such device will be launched in the U.S. at some point next year.

Meanwhile, they’re pushing to the mid and high ends of the market with the Grand S and Nubia 5.
