Qualcomm Zeroth Processors To Offer ‘Brain-Inspired Computing’

Qualcomm has a new processor in the works that looks to bring a wealth of new enhancements to mobile processors as we know it. The Zeroth processors are already smart, but can become smarter by learning.

The “Biologically Inspired” Zeroth processors can learn as they go and can be taught through positive reinforcement. Who knows, maybe these processors will live inside a robot one day that will teach your dog tricks so you don’t have to.

To demonstrate how the Zeroth processors can learn through positive reinforcement, Qualcomm put together the video below.

The video below shows the robot exploring a room with different colored squares on the floor.  When the robot stopped at a white square, it’s praised. This praise then prompts the robot to seek out only the white colored square, while ignoring the blue and yellow squares completely. Pretty cool stuff.

To achieve more realistic brain-like function, Qualcomm sought out how to make devices be able to perceive the world around them like the human does. This quest resulted in the Neural Processing Unit, or NPU. The NPU attempts to replicate the human neuron by sending out electrical pulses. Qualcomm also claims that the NPU will be able to be integrated into SoC’s in the future. When this happens, and the NPU is utilized by developers, the device in your pocket is going to be more human-like than ever.

So what do you think about the Zeroth processors’ capabilities? Awesome? Terrifying? Let us know in the comments below!
