BenQ mulling comeback to the phone market

BenQ mulling comeback to the phone market

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a single BenQ handset. The Taiwanese company left that business in 2007 after failing to turn it into profits. And that’s despite merging its mobile phone unit with Siemens’ mobile arm.

Alas, times are changing and BenQ moved ahead, focusing on other areas, namely monitors, LCD TVs and projectors. And now they’re mulling the return to the market, or at least that’s what DigiTimes is reporting.

Apparently, BenQ itself won’t be making the phones and will outsource production to Qisda. They’ll start with two models, the BenQ A3 and BenQ F3, targeting entry-level and mid-range segments.

It is said that the BenQ A3 will rock some Qualcomm’s quad-core core chip, 4.5-inch qHD screen and an 8-megapixel camera; while the F3 will come with MediaTek’s 1.2GHz quad-core MT6589 CPU, the same display (as the A3) and 12-megapixel camera.

BenQ will initially sell these two in Taiwan, and perhaps — who knows — bring them to other markets afterwards. We’ll see how that goes…
