Customers with an iPhone 5s who have severely shortened battery lives may have a defective phone, says Apple in a statement provided to the New York Times. The company released a brief note on Tuesday night confirming that a small number of iPhone 5s handsets  have a manufacturing defect that affects battery life.

Apple spokeswoman Teresa Brewer, told NYT.

“We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5S devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life. We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement phone.”

Apple didn’t release any additional information about the defect or how many phones were affected, though the Times hints the number could be in the low thousands. The company sold 9 million iPhones in the first weekend the new iPhone models went on sale. This 9 million figure includes both the iPhone 5s and the 5c, but conservative estimates suggest the 5s captured the lion share of the sales.
