Japan Display announced a new product that shows us what the future (as in next year) holds. Instead of boasting full HD 1920×1080 screens, next year’s flagship phones/phablets will rock panels with resolution of 2560×1440 pixels.

The company’s new 5.4-inch TFT LCD module packs more pixel per inch than any other screen out there. That’s 543 ppi for those of you pixel counters.

At the same time, Japan Display says that its screen enables low power consumption thanks to the increased panel transitivity. It also has a 1500:1 contrast ratio, and a 160 degree viewing angle (CR>100:1).

If you’ve been living under a rock you should know that Japan Display is a joint venture founded in 2011 between Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba. So we’re guessing Sony will be one of the first handset makers to use this so called WQHD panel. We’re just hoping that we won’t have to wait for too long to see the first Sony phablet sporting this technology. CES couldn’t come fast enough…
