Samsung has ambitious plans for its (and Intel’s) Tizen platform. Not only does it want to make Tizen-based smartphones and tablets, but also to cram the operating system in a vehicle near you. And they’ve already working with Toyota and Jaguar/Land Rover for Tizen based In-Vehicle-Infotainment (IVI) system.

According to Mark Skarpness, director of Systems Engineering in the Open Source Technology Center at Intel, Tizen is a platform “capable of open scalability” and as such – it can be used in TVs, cameras, wearable devices, refrigerators and yes, cars. What’s more, this scalability will further be increased with Tizen 3.0 that will be released in Q3 2014, cutting the RAM and storage space requirements in half.

The way I see things, Samsung and Intel have chosen their strategy wisely. Instead of fighting iOS and Android (dominant platforms) with smartphones and tablets, they start with other devices where the usage Android is still a novelty. It could be a nice start for the promising platform though it remains to be seen whether Intel, Samsung and their partners have what it takes to compete in today’s market…
