android-dev-phone-g1-android1The Android OS has come a long way since its original launch on the T-Mobile G1. Android fans can soon expect to see their Android smartphone getting down all sorts of crazy-cool features – things like an on-screen keyboard, homescreen widgets and speech recognition! Today, HTC and Google have taken the first step to making the Android 1.5 Cupcake update a reality for the general public. The Android 1.5 Cupcake update is now available for Android developers to play with.

As with most pre-production releases, there’s a catch. In order to play with Android 1.5, you’ll have to have yourself an Android Dev Phone 1 handy. Assuming you have the official development handset ready and willing, go ahead and download the necessary Android 1.5 files here.

In the meantime, the rest of the Android-wielding public will have to wait for Android 1.5 to go officially official… or wait for someone to port Android 1.5 onto hacked G1s, that is.
