Mozilla and its partners that include the likes of Deutsche Telekom, Qualcomm and ZTE have announced the creation of a new body to make sure devices using Firefox OS comply with open Web standards.
Dubbed Open Web Device Compliance Review Board (CRB), it will play a key role in deciding how devices and manufacturers get Firefox OS branding, and run independently to ensure API compliance, standardize performance, cut compatibility testing time and costs to get devices to market faster.
Under the deal, companies interested in making Firefox OS-based products can expect to get their seal of approval within three days of submission. The problem, however, is that vendors aren’t exactly flocking to make mobile devices running Mozilla’s mobile platform. To be fair, that could change next year with Firefox OS backers including such companies as major carriers (Deutsche Telekom, KDDI, Telefónica and Telenor) and handset makers (LG, Mozilla, Qualcomm, Sony, TCL/ALCATEL ONETOUCH and ZTE).
Although Mozilla has no plans to enter the U.S. market any time soon, phones running Firefox OS are now available in 13 countries with more to come.
