MediaTek is already offering quad- and octa-core chips, but what about hexa-core SoCs? Well, they may be looking at that market as well, GizChina is reporting.

The still unannounced MT6591 has been caught at Antutu and we get to learn how its 6 cores compare with MediaTek’s other chips. As one would imagine, this SoC sits somewhere between quad- and octa-core solutions, with an Antutu score of 23,600 points. In comparison, MediaTek’s octa-core chips can get around 27,000 points.

The problem with MediaTek’s current quad-core chips is that they don’t support full HD screens. This hexa-core solution solves that problem, while also being more affordable than octa-core chips. The MT6591 also rocks Mali 450 GPU, and is clocked at 1.5GHz, though a 1.7GHz model may also be released. It’s not clear whether this SoC supports 4G LTE connectivity, though.

The stage seems set for the official announcement and we guess this is just a question of timing now. Before we know it, we’ll see the MT6591 powering a number of China-made smartphones…
