Obviously the Glass isn’t cool enough for Google. After all, everyone can see you wearing one of these and that makes you look freaky a bit (except when you’re surrounded with your geek friends). Enter smart contact lenses with built-in camera. Sounds even worse, but that’s exactly what Google is seemingly working on.
According to the search giant’s patent filing, these smart contact lenses won’t be made for spies and geeks only; rather, Google wants to use this technology to improve one’s vision and even aid the blind. The tiny camera built inside these lenses would be able to detect objects and react accordingly, sending signals to the connected smartphone which in turn could provide users with audio cues. Or it could detect faces of people, help visually impaired individuals cross the street and so on.
On the other hand, people who don’t have problems with their sight would be able to see farther by focusing in on distant objects more clearly. So in a way, these lenses could improve eyesight, not unlike traditional contact lenses.
Yeah it’s promising technology, but it’s still in the “patent phase” and God knows when we’ll actually see this technology hitting the market. For one thing, it’s still unknown how these lenses would get energy to do their magic.
