Samsung shipped almost 500,000 Galaxy Gear smart watches in the first three months of the year, according to Strategy Analytics. The world’s biggest handset maker is now also a leading player in the smart watch space with estimated market share of 71%. The number doesn’t include the new Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo models which weren’t available until April.
Pebble, which pretty much started the smart watch craze, ended last year with 400,000 smart watches shipped and is a force to reckon with. In addition, it also established key partnerships both with “digital companies” such as eBay and Evernote, as well as firms from other industries like Mercedes.
Aside from Samsung and Pebble, there’s also Sony which has been pushing its wrist device for years now, and Qualcomm which Toq smart watch is considered more of a developer device than an end-user product.
Meanwhile, with the recently launched Android Wear initiative, we expect to see more companies lining up, including Motorola, LG, HTC and others. Plus, there’s Apple with its long-time-rumored iWatch…
