Samsonite is entering the mobile market by acquiring Speck, one of the biggest phone and tablet case makers, in a deal worth $85 million.
“The acquisition offers Samsonite the opportunity to participate in the large and growing smartphone-case market, which in the U.S. alone is estimated to be worth $2.3 billion, as well as in the tablet-case market, where Speck is also a leader,” said Tom Korbas, Americas president for Samsonite.
Aside from smartphone and tablet cases, Speck also “supports” other devices such as MacBooks and e-readers. The company’s vast portfolio is spread across multiple lines, including the CandyShell, FabShell and PixelSkin for phones; and the SeeThru and SmartShell for MacBook.
As noted above, Speck is a big name in this business; other major companies in the case-making market include Belkin, Otter and Incipio.
