The new iPhone will come with a new chip, which will likely be known as the Apple A8. According to a Chinese media report, the Cupertino giant will stick to its dual-core design, while making each of the cores run at 2GHz or more. For those counting these sort of things, that’s a rather massive improvement over the 1.3GHz A7 SoC found in the iPhone 5S.
Despite lacking extra cores, Apple’s chip will be more than capable to deliver smooth user experience. We can’t really compare apples to oranges, and while we’re sure that Qualcomm’s top chips are faster than what Apple is making, Cook & Co. have the privilege of creating both the hardware and software, so they can make sure that iOS is perfectly optimized for their own chips.
In addition, the new rumor also suggests that the chipset will keep using a 64-bit architecture and that it will be built using the 20nm process. Samsung and TSMC will get the privilege to make the A8.
Finally, it’s not clear whether Apple’s latest chip will integrate 4G LTE connectivity, and honestly – it doesn’t matter that much (if needed, they’ll use a separate modem). What makes the iPhone maker different from any other vendor out there is that it sells “packaged solutions” that work out of box. As I said it, they make both the hardware and software, and rarely go into details about the former. The iPhone’s performance can’t be easily compared to high-end Android smartphones, and that’s the way Apple (and its fans) likes it.
