Sony Smartwatch 3 won’t rock Android Wear; It will come with a similarly designed but water-proof body, new UI and wireless charging support

Sony, it seems, won’t be adopting Google’s Android Wear platform in the near future. According to Digi-Wo, a leaker with a good track-record, the Japanese company will keep using its own Android-based OS for the upcoming SmartWatch 3.

He went on to add that this device will build on top of the SmartWatch 2 (pictured above), adding water- and dust-resistant body as well as wireless charging capability to the mix. Moreover, we could get built-in Wi-Fi connectivity which should make the 3 a more independent product, one that can perfectly work even without a smartphone. Then again, you may need a smartphone connection to get some notifications, and to save some battery life — Bluetooth (especially Bluetooth LE) is much more battery friendly than Wi-Fi.

In addition, Digi-Wo also claims the SmartWatch 3 will come in the familiar square-shaped box, boasting a transflective screen with improved resolution (compared to SmartWatch 2). Transflective display, for those uninitiated, offers better visibility in direct sunlight while reducing the need of a backlight, thus increasing battery life on the long run.

Finally, we expect to get a totally different UI that would make the SmartWatch 3 that much easier to use.

Sony is expected to announce its new smart watch during the IFA conference in Berlin, Germany.
