BlackBerry Onyx Caught on Camera

The first we had heard of the BlackBerry codenamed “Onyx” was back in April. Well, a full video review of the device proper bearing the name has popped up following some pictures a few weeks ago.

The BlackBerry Onyx looks like it will be the successor to the Bold, since it’s packing all the same features (including battery, screen resolution and similar keypad) as well as a better camera (3.2 megapixels).  Style-wise, the Onyx picks up the same rubberized siding and buttons that we’ve been seeing in the Gemini and Storm 2, but notably different is the bezel around the screen and back edges. Other notable design changes include a new hatchless battery door and angled memory card slot underneath it.

Under the hood, the Onyx is rocking quad-band GSM and 3G, as well as memory on par with the new Curve 8900. The processor speed isn’t confirmed quite yet, and it’s hard to gage speed on an incomplete operating system. Here are the full specs to chew on:

  • 3G device – GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS (850/ 900/ 1800/1900)
  • 480 by 360 display
  • 256 megabytes of internal memory
  • 1550mAh M-S1 battery
  • 3.2 megapixel camera, with flash and auto focus
  • GPS, WiFi

Looks like a decent BlackBerry, and will do grandaddy Bold proud. We’ll keep our eyes open for a release date, but it’s safe to assume all the major GSM carriers will be picking this up sooner or later.
