We don’t usually associate Acer with cool mobile devices. Quite the contrary, their gear seldom praised, and the company is struggling to stay relevant in this space. They, obviously, don’t like this and are preparing to change some things in the future.
Beyond better devices, the Taiwanese company is also looking to launch an Apple Pay-like mobile payments service of its own, with plans to integrate fingerprint readers in its upcoming smartphones and tablets.
Acer’s president of “Build Your Own Cloud” division Maverick Shih confirmed that it is partnering with Egis Technology to develop the payment business. It is, however, unclear whether the company will use a fancy, touch-based fingerprint reader like the one iPhones have, or old swipe-based modules. Moreover, we’re not sure whether this will be a local service targeting users in Acer’s home turf of Taiwan, or will be released all around the world.
We do know what Egis is all about; it is a leading provider of data encryption and fingerprint biometrics, providing both swipe and touch-based fingerprint scanners.
Right now only few devices ship with integrated fingerprint readers, including few Samsung Galaxy phones, iPhone 5S/6/6 Plus, and the Huawei Ascend Mate 7.
