Google has pulled a handful of Pirate Bay apps from the Google Play Store in the company’s ongoing crusade against piracy. The move isn’t that surprising considering Google’s recent efforts to curb piracy by tweaking the company’s search algorithm to exclude results from The Pirate Bay and other torrent trackers.
Apps pulled from the Google Play Store include The Pirate Bay Proxy, The Pirate Bay Premium, The Pirate Bay Mirror and PirateApp. The apps are essentially customized web browsers that point users to Pirate Bay where they can begin their search for torrents. A few of them even utilize a proxy to keep the downloader’s location private and sidestep ISP throttling and blocks.
While the apps have vanished from the Play Store at least one of them is available for download and installation from a different source. The apps aren’t dead per se, but users won’t be receiving app updates from the Play Store and will have to download and install the apps from a different source. If you’ve already got one of these apps installed, you’ll still be able to use it, but once it’s uninstalled you’re on your own.
